           উপন্যাসৰ কোনো নিৰ্দ্দিষ্ট পৰিভাষা দিয়াতো নিশ্চয়কৈ বৰ কঠিন । সাধাৰণতে মানৱ সমাজৰ বাস্তৱ জীৱনত ঘটি থকা সঁচা ঘটনা পৰিঘটনা  সমূহৰ ভিত্তিত গদ্যৰ ভাষাৰে বিস্তৃত ৰূপত শব্দৰে লেখকৰ অনুভৱসমূহ কাগজত টুকি ৰখা ৰচনাৱলীকে উপন্যাস বুলি কোৱা হয় । সাহিত্যৰ বিভিন্ন অংগসূহৰ ভিতৰত এটি অনতম উল্লেখযোগ্য  অংগ হৈছে উপন্যাস সাহিত্য ।  মূলত: মানৱ জীৱন আৰু সমাজৰ প্ৰতিফলন হোৱা ৰচনাকে উপন্যাস হিচাপে মনোনিত কৰিব পাৰি । উপন্যাসৰ নিৰ্দ্দিষ্ট উপাদানসমূহ হৈছে -  কাহিনী ,  চৰিত্ৰ , সংলাপ , পৰিৱেশ আৰু ঐপন্যাসিকৰ জীৱন দৰ্শন ।  এই উপাদানসমূহৰ ভিতৰত কাহিনী হৈছে অন্যতম । উপন্যাসৰ এই উপাদানসমূহৰ লগতে এখন সফল উপন্যাস সৃষ্টিৰ বাবে ঐপন্যাসিকৰ বিশেষ চাৰিটা গুণ থকাটো বাঞ্চনীয় ।  সেইকেইটা হৈছে - প্ৰতিভা , জ্ঞান , জীৱনৰ অভিজ্ঞতা আৰু অন্ত:কৰণ । কাহিনী নিৰ্বাচনৰ ক্ষেত্ৰত লেখকৰ বুদ্ধিমত্তা আৰু বিশুদ্ধ বিচাৰ শক্তিৰ খুবেই প্ৰয়োজন ।  উপন্যাস এখনৰ কাহিনীৰ ভিত্তিতেই নিৰ্ভৰ কৰে উপন্যাসখনৰ ভৱিষ্যতৰ বাট । কাহিনীৰ পাছতেই এখন সফল উপন্যাস ৰচনাৰ আঁৰত থকা দ্বিতীয় তথা অতি  গুৰুত্বপূৰ্ণ আহিলা বিধ হৈছে  চৰিত্ৰ । তথাকথিত ৰূপত  যদিও চৰিত্ৰক উপন্যাস প্ৰস্তুতিৰ  সূচীত দ্বিতীয় স্থানত ৰখা হৈছে যদিও প্ৰকৃততে উপন্যাসৰ কাহিনী আৰু চৰিত্ৰৰ মাজত এক ওত:প্ৰোত সম্পৰ্কৰ স্থাপনা আছে । কাহিনী আৰু চৰিত্ৰ দুয়োয়ে  এটাই আনটোৰ অবিহনে অসম্পূৰ্ণ । এটাৰ পৰা আনটোক পৃথক কৰা সম্ভৱ নহয় । চৰিত্ৰসমূহ হৈছে মকৰাৰ দৰে যিয়ে নিজৰ চাৰিওফালে ঘটনাৰ জাল নিৰ্মাণ কৰি ঘটনাসমূহক চৰিত্ৰৰ সহায়েৰে  চৌদিশে বিয়পাই তোলে । 

উপন্যাসখনৰ তৃতীয় উপাদানবিধ হৈছে সংলাপ । উপন্যাসখনৰ কাহিনীটোত উল্লেখিত চৰিত্ৰসমূহৰ উন্নত স্বৰূপ ডাঙি ধৰিবৰ বাবেই সংলাপ হৈছে অত্যাৱশ্যকীয় উপাদান ।  উপন্যাসৰ সংলাপ সদায় সহজ সৰল ,  স্বাভাৱিক আৰু সাৱলীল হ'ব লাগে ।  পৰিৱেশ সৃষ্টি হৈছে উপন্যাসএখনৰ বাবে চতুৰ্থ তথা আন এবিধ অন্যতম উপাদান । উপন্যাসখনৰ কাহিনী অথবা চৰিত্ৰসমূহৰ সৈতে সংলগ্ন কৰিব পৰাকৈ  উপযুক্ত যি স্থান অথবা সময়ৰ বিৱৰণ কৰা হয় সেই স্থান অথবা সময় ,  সামাজিক ৰীতি নীতি , আচাৰ ব্যৱহাৰ , ৰীতি নীতি অনুযায়ী পটভূমি নিৰ্বাচন আৰু যুগ চিত্ৰ অংকনৰ প্ৰচেষ্টা ইত্যাদি সকলোবোৰ উপন্যাৰ কাহিনী ও চৰিত্ৰৰ মাজেৰে সম্পূৰ্ণকৈ পৰিস্ফুট হোৱাৰ প্ৰয়োজন । এখন সফল উপন্যাসৰ বাবে অন্তিমবিধ উপাদান হৈছে লেখকৰ জীৱন দৰ্শন । উপন্যাসৰ কাহিনীৰ মূলত প্ৰত্যক্ষ বা পৰোক্ষভাৱে হ'লেও  লেখকৰ জীৱনৰ  অভিজ্ঞতা সন্নিবিষ্ট হৈ থাকে । যিহেতু এখন সফল উপন্যাসত মানৱ সমাজৰ কেইখনমান জীয়া ছবিয়েই সংক্ষিপ্ত  কৰা হয় , সেয়েহে মানৱ জীৱনৰ প্ৰতি থকা লেখকৰ  চিন্তা ভাৱনাবোৰ উপন্যাসখনৰ জড়িয়তেই কল্পনা কৰা যায় ।

           এখন   উপন্যাস  হৈছে  একোটা সঁচা জীৱনৰ  ৰচনাৱলীৰে সজা জীয়া কাহিনী । এখন উপন্যাসৰ কাহিনী বা বিষয়বস্তুৰ ওপৰতে উপন্যাসখনৰ আকৰ্ষণীয়তা নিৰ্ভৰ কৰে । উপন্যাসখনৰ প্ৰকাশ ভংগীয়ে পঢ়ুৱৈসকলৰ মনত কৌতুহলৰ সৃষ্টি কৰিব পাৰিব লাগিব । লেখকে নিজৰ ধাউতি আৰু প্ৰতিভাৰে কাহিনীত ৰহন সানিব জানিব লাগিব । এখন উপন্যাসৰ সফলতা অথবা ইয়াৰ প্ৰচাৰ , প্ৰসাৰ আৰু বিকাশৰ নিৰ্ভৰ কৰিব উপন্যাসখনত লেখকে ব্যৱহাৰ কৰা শব্দ , ভাষা ও বাক্য গাঁথনিৰ ওপৰত । অসমৰ কিছু বিখ্যাত লেখক আৰু বিশিষ্ট সাহিত্যিকৰ ৰচনাৰ কিছু বিশেষ উপন্যাসে আজিও পঢ়ুৱৈসকলৰ মাজত উপন্যাসৰ প্ৰতি প্ৰেম জগাইছে । সেই বিশেষ ব্যক্তিসকল  আৰু তেখেতসকলৰ দ্বাৰা ৰচিত ব্যতিক্ৰমী উপন্যাসসমূহে যান্ত্ৰিকতাৰ প্ৰভাৱে সামৰা আজিৰ প্ৰজন্মৰ অন্তৰতো উপন্যাসৰ ঢৌ বাগৰাইছে । সাহিত্যৰ দিশত অপৰিহাৰ্য্য বৰঙণি আগবঢ়োৱা এই সময়ৰ জাকত জিলিকা কিছু লেখকৰ ৰচিত উপন্যাসসমূহ বিশেষভাৱে উল্লেখযোগ্য । উদাহৰণস্বৰূপে  অনুৰাধা শৰ্মা পূজাৰীৰ হৃদয় এক বিজ্ঞাপন,নাহৰৰ নিৰিবিলি ছা,চাহেবপুৰাৰ বৰষুণ,ব'ৰাগী নদীৰ ঘাট, কাঞ্চন বৰুৱাৰ অসীমত যাৰ হেৰাল সীমা , য়েছে দৰজে ঠংছিৰ শৱ কটা মানুহ , মৌন ওঁঠ মুখৰ হৃদয় , মণিকুন্তলা ভট্টাচাৰ্যৰ দস্তখত,সন্ধ্যা,অৰুন্ধতী,ৰীতা চৌধুৰীৰ এই সময় সেই সময়,দেও লাংখুই,মাকাম,ৰাজীৱ ঈশ্বৰ,ৰাগ মালকোশ ইত্যাদি উপন্যাসে অসমীয়া সাহিত্যক অন্য এক মাত্ৰা প্ৰদান কৰে। এইসমূহ উপন্যাসৰ কাহিনী , চৰিত্ৰ , উপস্থাপন ইত্যাদি আটাইবোৰ দিশেই প্ৰশংসনীয় স্থানত আছে । আৰু এই বিখ্যাত লেখকসকলো তেখেতসকলৰ ব্যতিক্ৰমী ৰচনাৱলী অথবা উপন্যাসসমূহৰ  বাবেই আজি অসমৰ পঢ়ুৱৈ সকলৰ মাজত জনপ্ৰিয় হৈ ৰৈছে । বৰ্তমান সময়ত  অসমীয়া সাহিত্যৰ জগতখনত  ৰঞ্জু হাজৰিকাই ভালেমান ৰহস্যময়ী উপন্যাস লিখি অসমীয়া সাহিত্যৰ ভঁৰাল চহকী কৰিছে ।

A novel is a collection of words that express the author's feelings in prose based on true events happening in the real life of human society. The specific elements of a novel are the story, characters, dialogue, setting and the novelist's philosophy of life. Story is one of these elements. Along with these elements of a novel, a novelist must have four special qualities to create a successful novel. They are - talent , knowledge , life experience and heart. The writer's intelligence and pure judgment are very important in choosing the story. The future of a novel depends on the story of the novel. After the story, the second and most important tool behind writing a successful novel is the character. Therefore, it is important to understand the characteristics of the novel. Since a successful novel summarizes only a few living pictures of human society , the author’s thoughts on human life are imagined through the novel.

It can be divided into different categories according to the elements of the novel. These include event-oriented novels, character and action-oriented novels, and setting-oriented novels. Novels are also divided into social, historical, regional, autobiographical, mystery, letter novels, investigative novels, etc. according to their content and execution. Sometimes novels reveal some of people's secret lives. Every reader feels the similarities of his own life in the picture of a successful novel by a mature writer. Therefore, the reader believes that the novel tells the true story of life. For these reasons, the reader feels the utmost satisfaction , a wonderful thrill and joy in reading a novel or its story. In today's modern novel, every emotional sentence of the author floats the reader in the ocean of thought through the story.
